As you can see from the image, the classic pencil sharpener blade is a dangerous weapon. A 10-year old South Carolina boy was suspended and interviewed by the police for possessing the blade of his broken pencil sharpener. He may face further disciplinary action.
I tend to agree with one of the Boing Boing commentors:
[the teacher should have said] “… what are you sharpening your pencil with? Is that just the metal blade? That’s really dangerous, you really should have asked me and I can easily let you use the one we have here in class. Were you going to hurt anyone with this? No? Okay, well, I’ll just take this and throw it out. Please don’t do this again.”
Instead, being hamstrung by the “Thinking’s hard! Let’s go zero-tolerance!” laws, and probably fear of being sued / prosecuted into oblivion if they deviated one iota from the script, or just being too weary to care any more, they traumatize a 10-year old child.
Hat tip to Mark Frauenfelder at Boing Boing: “Fourth grader suspended for using broken pencil sharpener“.
