Rotten Publishing

Language Log is one of my favorite sites. Poster Bill Poser, in Olla Podrida, was “taken aback” that, in a brief article in The New York Times

she and her consultants and editors were aware of the correct name and etymology but thought that some readers might be put off by the notion of rotten food, so they changed the name a little and made up a fake etymology

Smells a little bit like rotten publishing to me.
